What Is a PLC?
Practical fundamentals from LPL Industrial Automation • Secunderabad, Telangana
A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial controller that uses a stored program to operate a machine or process. It reads signals from equipment, applies programmed logic, and commands outputs.
How does a PLC work?
A common cyclic model has three main steps: read inputs, execute the control program, and update outputs. The controller repeats this work while also handling tasks such as communication and diagnostics. Actual I/O timing varies by PLC architecture, task configuration, and network.
For example, a conveyor sensor can signal that a box has reached a position. The program checks the sequence conditions and commands a suitable actuator through an output interface. This is a teaching example, not a complete machine design.
What is inside a PLC system?
| Part | Purpose |
|---|---|
| CPU and memory | Execute the program and store application data. |
| Power supply | Provides the specified operating power. |
| Input modules | Read switches, sensors, and measurement signals. |
| Output modules | Send control signals to compatible devices. |
| Communication interfaces | Exchange information with HMIs, drives, or other controllers. |

PLC, HMI, and control panel: what is the difference?
The PLC runs control logic. A human-machine interface (HMI) gives operators a way to view status, enter permitted settings, and respond to alarms. The control panel houses and connects the electrical hardware. A successful project considers all three together.
What should you prepare for a PLC programming project?
- A description of the machine sequence and operating modes.
- An I/O list showing each signal and connected device.
- The controller and HMI model numbers, if equipment already exists.
- The required alarms, settings, communication links, and acceptance checks.
Can a normal PLC handle machine safety?
Do not assume standard PLC logic is suitable for emergency stops or protective functions. Safety functions need a risk-assessed design and appropriate safety-rated hardware and software.
