PNP vs NPN Sensors

Practical fundamentals from LPL Industrial Automation • Secunderabad, Telangana

For common three-wire DC switching sensors, a PNP output sources current to the load; an NPN output sinks current from the load. The PLC input circuit must be compatible with that output.

These relationships describe conventional current flow in the circuit, rather than a brand’s shorthand label. Check the exact input module diagram. See AutomationDirect’s PNP/NPN compatibility explanation.

Conceptual current paths

PNP output ON
+V → PNP sensor output → PLC input circuit → 0 V
NPN output ON
+V → PLC input circuit → NPN sensor output → 0 V

These are simplified current paths, not terminal wiring diagrams. The sensor also needs its own specified power connections. Real devices have voltage drops, leakage current, and current ratings that must be checked.

Does PNP mean normally open?

No. PNP/NPN describes the electrical output type. Normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) describe switching behavior relative to the defined sensing condition. A sensor can be PNP-NO, PNP-NC, NPN-NO, or NPN-NC; some models offer selectable or complementary outputs. For photoelectric sensors, also check light-ON/dark-ON terminology.

Can I replace a PNP sensor with an NPN sensor?

Do not treat it as a direct replacement. Verify whether the receiving input supports the required current path, whether its common can be configured appropriately, and whether other signals share that common. Changing one device may affect the design of an entire input group. An approved interface may be needed.

What information should you compare before ordering?

  • Complete sensor part number and output specification.
  • PLC input module model and group-common diagram.
  • Supply range, output rating, and input electrical thresholds.
  • Sensing distance, target material, mounting, connector, and switching function.

A similar housing and matching connector are not enough to establish electrical compatibility.
